Go Broncos! Or: Slim Cessna – Mile High Music!
So it’s been kinda quiet around here of late. I was off to that London to see a heap of reformed indie bands and also to finally see Slim Cessna’s Auto Club at their first UK show. I would like to write about what an amazing thing that was, but after a few days in the city I was all sorts of fucked up and my memories are fleeting. Even shook Munly by the hand and had my photo taken with Slim hisself, which was good of him considering how I think I was largely being a grade A drunk asshole by this point in the evening.
And if that wasn’t enough, my best girl was in Prague for a break and SCAC were playing there too and she came back all sorts of obsessed and knows things like Munly’s inside leg size and where he went to school and what Slim’s favourite flavour of milkshake is (whiskey, apparently). So it’s all been a bit Denver Sound round these parts the last few weeks.
With that in mind, I’m kinda planning some sorta mahoosive Denver Sound blogpost with links to music by the many-headed hydra that is Slim and Munly and the rest. For now, some tasters…Denver Broncos UK- the brilliantly, perversely named latest SCAC offshoot is Slim, Munly and the Reverend Glasseye and they sound like one of the most eerie and menacing incarnations yet. They seem to be eschewing regular shows for art happenings and whatnot, and they’ve yet to release anything, but te stuff online is pretty fucking special. Like this:
(for once, it’s worth reading the comments page to see all the Broncos fans showing up my mistake and deciding the song’s all kinds of ‘gay’.)
They’ve got a myspace too, like in the olden days. For my part, I’m obsessing over Munly & The Lee Lewis Harlots, which is Munly in other of his projects, this time with cellos and beautiful female harmonies and such. Really is gorgeous, melancholy, troubled stuff. But then that’s Munly all over. You should buy their album, it’s really fucking special.
Finally, there’s a documentary all about this Denver Sound thing, and like all cool projects these days there’s a kickstarter too – take a look here.
