Mixes
Hey folks. After some messing about in the guts of the interweb, we’re pretty sure we’ve rehosted all of our old mixes down below there. Do let us know if any aren’t working and we’ll kick the hell out of the computer till they do.
Most of them are now on our mixcloud too, or will appear soon.
This was supposed to be new ‘un to kinda ‘launch’ that whole deal, which I guess it is, only typically late, liken to my own self. So, short version is this is kinda inspired by the fine soundtrack record that Nick Cave put together for that ‘Lawless’ movie. Which is why it kicks off with Ralph Stanley singin’ about bootleggers and has velvet underground covers and a fistful of bluegrass and some folks off of that soundtrack and some not and some old stuff and a pretty hearty portion of new (ish) music too.

Excellent site, keep up the good work
Enjoying the tours around the musical world your Honky Tonkin’ & Sunday Morning mixes sparked. Buying stuff I never imagined I would, thanks. How’s about a folk mix with a bit of a small p, political or social conscience bent? Woody Guthrie “All You Fascists Bound To Lose” – Chumbawamba “The Diggers Song” The Men They Couldn’t Hang, “Smugglers”…..In relation to govt moves, lobbied for by the BPI, to restrict illegal downloads, I have to say that I buy far more music now than ever before, often times through blogs like SPA. Fantastic services to music buying people that should be roundly applauded & encouraged I say.
Aw cheers. To be honest, not a massive fan of political folk, although I have bits. i could probably make a decent mix but it wouldn’t be particularly informed. I’ll have a think…
Loving the Sunday morning mix…..and gets played about once a month on Sunday morning recovery time in bed!
[...] So. Bobby becomes part of Huey’s new act the Clowns. They have a couple of pretty big hits but soon Huey gets tired of being out on the road preferring to sit back at home in New Orleans writing. In a typical move of the time the band, still billed as Huey Smith and The Clowns carry on touring without him and New Orleans piano legend James Booker takes his chair. Marchan is by this time pretty much leading the band under someone else’s name and ain’t getting no credit for it. When the first album comes out with just Huey’s big smiling face on the front, Bobby is understandably kinda pissed at the situation. Seems The Clowns weren’t exactly a bunch of photogenic guys. So, they put out a couple records as Bobby Marchan & The Clowns. Then Huey writes this song. Everybody knows right off that it’s a big hit. Vincent however has watched the rise of Elvis and decides he’ll have a much bigger hit with a young white guy on the tune.
