So long, Captain
Way to spoil the festive mood there Don! I mean, we all know he’d been sick a good while and everything – I’m guessin’ that most of ya has heards that Don Van Vliet, the man who was Captain Beefheart, has passed on this last week. Complications of MS it appears. So if you know you know, and if you don’t, then you should. He took the blues and made it weird and broken and then when he’d had enough he wandered out in to the desert to paint. Good for him. You can find a largely untrue comic book history of The Magic Band here. I don’t know if there’s a grain of truth in this here story but we likes it a lot and it’ll cheer your sad heart. Story goes Bono out of U2 found out how Beefheart was livin’ in a trailer out in the Mojave desert and writes to him to the effect “Captain Beefheart, if you’d like to come perform on our tour or open up or play a few dates with us – we’d be very proud – I want to write with you”. To which the good captain replies….
“Dear Bongo, I don’t know who you are or what you want from me but don’t call me again.”
Now, that ought to bring a smile right? here’s a couple of vaguely christmassy tunes from the man, ‘Ain’t no Santa Claus On The Evenin Stage’ and ‘Steal Softly Through Snow’, which we can’t confirm is Obama’s favourite track on Trout Mask but who knows. And we also got ‘Peaches’ off one of them failed sell-out-go mainstream records from the mid seventies that no-one likes much. It’s pretty straight ahead but I always kinda liked this tune.
