Get Right With God – Wheel Inside A Wheel

So how are we all doin’ this mornin friends? Not been taken up to heaven in the rapture? Left to your suffering and torment on the bitter earth with a zombie army of miserable sinners? I guess you know what I’m talkin ’bout here? A herd of enthusiastic fools been running about the place telling everyone who had the common courtesy to lissen how the world was ending yesterday and so on. I hope that none of you have been overly concernin yerselves on the matter. Bein’ as y’all are right thinkin’ and intelligent, if not wise,  you’ll have brushed it off for the foolishness it is right? Am I right?

bad crazinessI know we weren’t here last sunday and pretty quiet the week before, don’t fear brethren, I gots to make up the shortfall for yer. To be clear, what has gone on here is this crazy old guy Harold Camping reckons he’s worked himself out some secret mathematical code in the Bible and used it to predict the end of the world. And then other people have actually listened to him. Little too much Dan Brown at bed time if you ask me. He done this before too, predicted it would all crash and burn back in ’94. I don’t think I need to say how that went for him, he ‘fessed up as he ‘may have made some miscalculations’. He didn’t, the whole idea is just wrong-headed, arrogant and, seeing as some people take him serious, irresponsible. Why’s anyone listen to this wacko? He runs one of them christian broadcasting services called Family Radio is why. These types of things just never go well in my limited experience of ’em. Snake oil is what it is, a cult. Seems Camping’s lot have 55 stations in the US and are broadcast on every continent in many languages. Damn. I mean I’m all about some free speech people, but couldn’t these guys just run a soup kitchen or somethin?

Now to back up this here panic-mongerin you’ll have seen them quoting the Bible in the shape of Ezekiel 33:3 and maybe you think it has to do with the end of the world or somethin’. It don’t.

“If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people;”

that’s right, they be blowing the trumpets. We can consider ourselves warned. Now, I’m pretty sure all manner of bible verses could be used to back up a ‘spread the word’ type message but Ezekiel is a perfect choice ‘cos ol’ Zeke come out with some pretty far out stuff himself and is a favourite of all kindsa fringe church craziness. Mostly this is on account of  his vision of the ‘wheel inside the wheel’ which gave us today’s mighty tunes (you was thinkin’ I’d never get to it right? Hold tight friends, ‘cos I ain’t done yet) here’s an artist’s interpretation of it…

and here’s the whole passage for you to chew on, Ezekiel is down by the river in Babylon, havin’ a little quiet time to himself when

I looked, and I saw a windstorm coming out of the north an immense cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light. The center of the fire looked like glowing metal, and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures. In appearance their form was that of a man, but each of them had four faces and four wings. Their legs were straight; their feet were like those of a calf and gleamed like burnished bronze. Under their wings on their four sides they had the hands of a man. All four of them had faces and wings, and their wings touched one another. Each one went straight ahead; they did not turn as they moved. Their faces looked like this: Each of the four had the face of a man, and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle. Such were their faces. Their wings were spread out upward; each had two wings, one touching the wing of another creature on either side, and two wings covering its body. Each one went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they went. The appearance of the living creatures was like burning coals of fire or like torches. Fire moved back and forth among the creatures; it was bright, and lightning flashed out of it. The creatures sped back and forth like flashes of lightning. As I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the ground beside each creature with its four faces. This was the appearance and structure of the wheels: They sparkled like chrysolite, and all four looked alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel. As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the creatures faced; the wheels did not turn about as the creatures went. Their rims were high and awesome, and all four rims were full of eyes all around. When the living creatures moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the living creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, and the wheels would rise along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. When the creatures moved, they also moved; when the creatures stood still, they also stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. Spread out above the heads of the living creatures was what looked like an expanse, sparkling like ice, and awesome. Under the expanse their wings were stretched out one toward the other, and each had two wings covering its body. When the creatures moved, I heard the sound of their wings, like the roar of rushing waters, like the voice of the Almighty, like the tumult of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings. Then there came a voice from above the expanse over their heads as they stood with lowered wings. Above the expanse over their heads was what looked like a throne of sapphire, and high above on the throne was a figure like that of a man. I saw that from what appeared to be his waist up he looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and that from there down he looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded him. Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. When I saw it, I fell facedown, and I heard the voice of one speaking.

Ezekiel 1:4-28

No, go on back an read it slackers – This confusing and flat out astonishing passage has been seen as a vision of the chariot of God, as evidence of U.F.O.’s, as a foretelling of the way modern transport would change the world and all sorts. Not to mention the possibility that Ezekiel was spending a little too much time alone in the hot sun, maybe he had himself a still out there or had been chewing on some of them ‘mystical’ plants, if you see what I say. Jewish mystics called it Merkabah and the Talmud discourages the kindsa idle speculation that have led to all this U.F.O. business. Apparently the passages are traditionally read at Shavuot a pretty obscure Jewish holiday that comes up this year in a couple weeks (June 6-7). Yessir! Yes Ma’am! I do believe you learned something right there. As for the tune here, there’s an idea it was linked to the underground railroad as a code song, I don’t know about that. We posted up ol’ Pops take on it last year some time and we  got some scratchy old time recordings for you right here, starting with The West Virginia Collegiate Singers, There’s gospel quartets a plenty done this tune, The Charioteers and The mighty Dixie Hummingbirds give it some here for you, John Lee Hooker’s version is pretty much the way you’d expect ….
