Listen to me, Butterfly

Not more than a couple weeks back I was sat in a bar in a strange place with a new friend and the bartender called her ‘Butterfly’. This was on account of a tattoo of a bunch of butterflies fluttering up her arm and was sweet and friendly rather than creepy and weird. As it goes. Anyways it got this song here swimming back through my head and it’s always welcome when it comes around. Recollection ain’t always what it could be but if I ain’t mistaken ‘So Much Wine’ was the first I ever heard of the Handsome Family and I was completely taken with it before it was even half way through. Heartbroken and helpless and beautiful and slightly christmassy just for good measure. I was pondering on this and alsounseencover on how it may still be their finest moment as it played in my head. Which is not to suggest the many hours I spent listening to all their other stuff was any kind of disappointment – no indeed, not a single moment of it wasted. It’s been a while since the last album, on which all the songs were about animals, an overarching theme that suggested the record had been hard fought and long wrought. Not that I’m down on it but it didn’t seem to just flow out the way the earlier ones had. Still, I’ma cussing myself for not having any of their music on my phone and not listening to them in too long and what do you know? I hear the frogs a -calling, the stars are aligned and a new record is almost with us friends. Here’s an adorable clip they made themselves for ‘Gold’ the aptly titled first track off of that soon come new record ‘Unseen’. It’s just wonderful and (possibly inspired by their leap in profile after ‘Far From Any Road’ was used on True Detective) tells the tale of a robbery gone wrong in beautiful Handsome Family style. All the things are gonna be much better than they were you know?
